Hip Hop Culture: Influencing Fashion

Hip hop came on the scene in the 1970’s. For decades, it was never accepted as a mainstream form of music. Constantly shunned and left out by society, hip hop artist and followers continued to represent.

One of the biggest elements of hip hop is loyalty. You couldn’t be a true hip hop fan, if you weren’t loyal to its style, even though it was a form of music that was kept in the shadows. Today, those loyal followers who never gave up are now leading the way in mainstream music, fashion, and culture.

In the 1990’s hip hop began to emerge from the dark where it was hidden for so long. This new unstoppable force not only came into the light as a form of music, gaining millions of new followers, it came into the light as a culture of its own. Sure, country music had its cowboy hat wearing followers and rock had its long haired followers, but there was no fashion that transcended those boundaries.

Along comes hip hop with its baggy clothes, hoodies, jeans, bling, and suits, and the fashion of its followers began to infect the rest of the population. Today you see those hip hop inspired styles and accessories everywhere in popular culture. New forms of jewelry like chains, bracelets, and grillz that bling have been created. Now, you see people of all generations taking advantage of these new styles that have been given to us by hip hop.
